Whatever reason you’re removing a fixture for, there are some important steps and precautions to take.

1. Switch every single switch in the bathroom to off. Next, you need to find the fusebox in your home. It is often in the garage, basement or sometimes the hallway or bedroom. If you’re unsure, your agent or landlord should be able to assist you. Once you find the fusebox, switch all electrics in the house to off. This is for safety reasons for when removing bathroom light fixtures or similar. You could do it for just the bathroom alone, but you may as well be extra safe when it comes to removing bathroom light fixtures.

2. Be sure you have a torch or battery-powered lamp (or even oil lamp) if it’s night time or if there just aren’t any windows in your bathroom, so that you can see what you’re doing when changing any of your bathroom light fixtures. You will also need a step ladder or something similar so that you can reach the bathroom light fixture(s) for removal. The first thing you need to do is unscrew the bulbs and remove them, and also remove any shades or globes that are attached to the fixture you’re removing, if there are any. Bathroom light fixtures come in huge varieties; some will have no extra attachments, whereas others may have quite a few. Following this, remove the screws of the fixture.

3. It’s important to remember when removing bathroom light fixtures that the wires attached to them from the ceiling need to be tested by a voltmeter. This will prove whether there is any electricity running through them or not. There shouldn’t be, but it’s worth taking the precaution just in case. Any bathroom light fixtures could still have a current if you didn’t switch off the fusebox properly like you thought you did. Once you know there’s no currency going through the wires, disconnect them. With most bathroom light fixtures the wires can just be unscrewed.

4. Once done, it’s a good idea to strip any wires that were connected to bathroom light fixtures, but only by about half an inch. You should then place wire nuts on them for safety. You can leave them like this until you buy new bathroom light fixtures ready for fitting.
